A complete renovation of and underground addition to the building and expansion of the public areas on the first floor; including exhibition galleries, a library, an auditorium, meeting rooms, a botany lab, a design lab, a catering kitchen and greenhouses. The lower level houses non-public functions including offices, shops and plant preparation.

• Replacement of all air handling equipment including conversion of constant volume systems to variable air volume systems and carbon dioxide monitoring and control of outside air. New kitchen and lab exhaust systems.
• HVAC systems serving Rare Book Storage and one Gallery are designed to maintain tight temperature and humidity controls.
• Replacement of a 300 ton centrifugal chiller with a 350 ton screw chiller with a sound attenuating enclosure. The new chiller was selected for quiet operation to eliminate existing noise transmission to the public spaces. Pond water is utilized for condenser water.
• New sprinkler system in the entire (previously non-sprinkled) building, and a new gaseous fire protection system for Rare Book Storage.
• Conversion of the constant volume chilled water system to a primary variable flow system.
• Installation of a new condenser water filtration system to treat the pond water used for chiller condenser water.
